September Newsletter - Summer Highlights

Written By Inasmuch Community Society

Inasmuch supports Refugee Claimants (those seeking asylum in Canada) through transitional housing and wrap around services including settlement support, food, transportation to immigration check ins and community.

Life is better together! The richness of community has been experienced by our residents, staff, Board, and volunteers this summer!

How Inasmuch Fostered Community Building this Summer

Through Celebrating our ESL Students

On June 17, we celebrated our Inasmuch Community ESL students (program sponsored by a grant from Vancity) with over 100 of us coming together for a pot luck meal featuring foods from the home countries of our students including the Ukraine, Asia, Middle East, South America and more (so delicious), a scavenger hunt, and an awards presentation. The smiles, joy, noise of children playing, and watching community in action, were so fun to experience.

Our Inasmuch Community ESL program starts again Sept. 12, 2023. Are you a teacher looking for a great community? Please reach out to Betty Lou, our Inasmuch Community ESL Coordinator at esl@inasmuch.ca

Class times are Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:00 am to noon, or Tuesday and Thursday 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

Through Gathering at Inasmuch Events

We love gathering both current and past residents 3 times/year to continue to build our Inasmuch community. Our August party was the biggest yet! Over 50 of us gathered for a BBQ, games and conversation. We treasure these times of connection that feel like the family gatherings many of us grew up attending.

Through Partnering with Local Businesses

A group of local Abbotsford business owners know the power of community. Together they form a group called Communidad which exists to use their combined resources to do good for humanity.

Members of Communidad and their guests gathered at the Eco Dairy in Abbotsford to support Inasmuch and Food for the Hungry.

Thank you Communidad for your support! Inasmuch received $9000.00 to help Refugee Claimants in the Fraser Valley.

Through a Local Pickleball Fundraiser

On Aug. 19, members of the Chilliwack Pickleball Club came together to have fun, compete, and raise funds for Inasmuch. Thank you James and Jacquie Dick for hosting this fun event!

This event raised over $500.00 to help Refugee Claimants in the Fraser Valley through Inasmuch.

Would you consider joining our Inasmuch Community?

Luqma Basha -Dessert from the August Party - You will Love it!

1 cup white sugar

1 cup corn starch

2 cups milk

1 cup butter

Few drops vanilla

Combine ingredients and cook over medium heat stirring constantly until mixture forms a paste. If you cook it too long it will get hard, so do not overcook.

Take a 9”x13” pan and cover the bottom with flaked coconut. Spread the paste over top. Put in the fridge for a few hours. Before serving cover the top with whipped cream.

Enjoy!
